The Tennessee Titans are in the midst of a quarterback battle as they gear up for the upcoming season. While nothing is set in stone just yet, it appears that Mason Rudolph is the frontrunner to secure the backup quarterback role.
Rudolph joined the Titans this offseason and immediately entered the competition with Malik Willis for the coveted No. 2 spot behind starter Will Levis. Rudolph wasted no time in making his case for the job, impressing coaches and teammates alike with his performance in practices.
According to Jim Wyatt of the team’s website, Rudolph has been on fire, completing an impressive 64-of-76 passes in both 7-on-7 and team drills. Head coach Brian Callahan has taken notice of Rudolph’s strong play, leaving little room for Willis to make a case for himself.
Callahan acknowledged the difficult decision ahead, stating, “The hard part is that Mason’s played so well, too. We wouldn’t be moving Malik up because of Mason’s performance, we’d just be allowing Malik an opportunity to play with the twos. It’s hard to elevate Malik and demote Mason when Mason’s played very good football, too. So, it’s a good problem to have. Like I said, it helps the rest of the group be able to showcase, and they can both operate and manage, and it helps the whole process for guys competing. So that part’s been really positive.”
As the Titans prepare for their first preseason game against the San Francisco 49ers, all eyes will be on Rudolph to see if he can translate his success in practice to live game action. This will be a crucial opportunity for Rudolph to solidify his standing as the backup quarterback heading into the regular season. The quarterback battle in Tennessee is heating up, and Rudolph appears to be in the driver’s seat for the coveted role behind Levis. Stay tuned as the competition unfolds in the coming weeks.
