In the world of American football, the San Francisco 49ers are facing a tough decision as they have yet to determine who will be backing up their star quarterback, Brock Purdy, in Week 1 of the upcoming season.
Head coach Kyle Shanahan recently revealed that the team is still deliberating between Joshua Dobbs and Brandon Allen for the role, but remains confident in both players. “I feel very good about both of them,” Shanahan said to David Bonilla of 49erswebzone.com. “I think they’re neck and neck. That hasn’t changed.”
While Dobbs put up impressive numbers during the preseason, going 34-of-51 for 351 yards with a touchdown and interception, Allen also showcased his skills by going 19-of-30 for 194 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions. Not to mention, Allen has already made nine regular-season starts in his career, while Dobbs has 14 under his belt.
Shanahan hinted that the decision might not be permanent and could change week to week depending on the opponent. “So those are things that you always look into for the scout team,” Shanahan explained. “Those are things that you always look into how our game plan is or what we think we need to beat another team.”
With uncertainty looming over the 49ers’ backup quarterback position, only time will tell who will ultimately be selected to support Purdy on the field. Stay tuned for more updates as the season draws closer.
