Miami Dolphins edge rusher Jaelan Phillips suffered a devastating Achilles injury in a game against the Jets last November. Now, after nine long months of recovery, Phillips is vowing to come back stronger than ever.
In typical football player fashion, Phillips is not letting the statistics deter him. While most players require two years to fully bounce back from a major injury, Phillips is not concerned. “I don’t see this as a get-back year,” Phillips boldly declared. “I don’t see this as dipping my toe in the water. I’m coming guns blazing and I’m putting my best foot forward.”
Phillips is adamant that he is ready to hit the ground running, but ultimately, it will be up to the coaching staff to decide whether he will be on a pitch count to start the season. When asked about this possibility, Phillips remained diplomatic, stating, “You’re going to have to ask somebody else. Hopefully it doesn’t come down to that. Hopefully we go out there and handle our business but regardless, I’m here to do whatever they need me to do. Obviously, I’m going to be pushing to play as much as I can, but I have to be smart at the end of the day. It’s a long season.”
Despite only playing in eight games last season, Phillips still managed to rack up an impressive 6.5 sacks, tying him for the team lead at the time of his injury. In his three seasons in the league, Phillips has accumulated 146 tackles, 22 sacks, and one interception.
“I got stronger, leaner, faster,” Phillips proudly stated. “I’m in a really good place.”
With Phillips’ determination and optimism, it’s clear that he is not letting his injury hold him back. As the new season approaches, all eyes will be on Phillips as he looks to make his mark once again on the field.
