As the Kansas City Chiefs gear up for the start of the 2024 season against the Baltimore Ravens, their injury concerns are few and far between. However, one player whose status remains uncertain for Week 1 is receiver Hollywood Brown.
Speaking to the media on Thursday, General Manager Brett Veach provided an optimistic update on Brown, who has been sidelined since sustaining a shoulder injury in the preseason opener against Jacksonville on Aug. 10. Veach compared Brown’s situation to that of former Chief Tyreek Hill in 2019, who missed four games due to a similar issue.
“I don’t like talking about medical because if I say something and he’s ahead of that timeline or behind that timeline then I don’t want to put any more pressure on the kid,” Veach explained. “But I probably can confidently say it was similar to Tyreek, and I think given that timeline I think it falls within the timeline that Tyreek went through, but I know he’s here every day. He’s to the point now where he can laugh without pain, so that’s a good thing.”
Brown’s progress has been promising, with Veach noting that the decision not to place him on injured reserve was a strategic one. If Brown had been placed on IR, he would have been sidelined for at least the first four weeks of the season. Veach’s comments suggest that Brown could potentially return before Week 4 at the latest.
Kansas City signed Brown to a one-year deal in March after a successful season with the Cardinals in 2023, during which he hauled in 51 receptions for 574 yards and four touchdowns. With Brown’s potential return on the horizon, the Chiefs will be looking to add another weapon to their already potent offense in the upcoming season.
