In what seemed like a disastrous move at the time, the Cleveland Browns made waves in the football world on March 18, 2022, with their trade for quarterback Deshaun Watson. Critics and fans alike were quick to pounce on the decision, questioning the wisdom behind bringing Watson on board.
Fast forward two years, and the trade looks even more questionable. Watson, who was suspended for the first 11 games of his Browns career due to allegations of sexual misconduct, has struggled to find his groove in Cleveland. Meanwhile, the Houston Texans, the team that traded him away, have emerged as the reigning AFC South champions.
It comes as no surprise, then, that Hannah McNair, the wife of Texans owner Cal McNair, took the opportunity to poke fun at the Browns during a recent episode of The Ultimate Fan Experience, a popular Houston sports podcast.
“Thank a Brown. Have you thanked a Brown lately?” McNair quipped. “I thank them for all of our players.”
The compensation from the Watson trade has proven to be a boon for Houston, bringing in assets like defensive end Will Anderson and wide receiver Tank Dell, among others.
As the Browns continue to struggle with their quarterback situation, the Texans are thriving, thanks in part to the bold move they made in trading away Deshaun Watson. Only time will tell how this trade will ultimately be judged, but for now, it seems like the Texans have come out on top in more ways than one.
