Celebrating his induction into the prestigious Green Bay Packers Hall of Fame, former linebacker Clay Matthews took the opportunity to add some humor to the evening by playfully poking fun at his former teammate, Aaron Rodgers. Despite Rodgers’ absence at the ceremony, Matthews couldn’t help but share a comical anecdote about the New York Jets quarterback.
“Unfortunately Aaron couldn’t be here today and rightfully so. But he did text me early today that he was going to lock himself in a dark closet, sip on some ayahuasca, and join us in spirit. So, thank you Aaron… wherever you are,” Matthews jokingly quipped, eliciting laughter from the delighted crowd. The linebacker, known for his infectious personality, had the audience eating out of the palm of his hand with his witty delivery.
Matthews, a seasoned veteran who spent a decade showcasing his talents in the green and gold of the Packers, reflected on his illustrious career which culminated in a Super Bowl victory in 2010. Selected 26th overall in the 2009 NFL draft, he quickly made a name for himself as a fierce competitor on the gridiron, earning accolades such as first-team All-Pro in 2010 and second-team All-Pro in 2012.
During his tenure in Green Bay, Matthews compiled an impressive stat line, recording 83.5 sacks and forcing 15 fumbles. In 2019, he made the transition to the Los Angeles Rams for his final season in the league, where he continued to make an impact by tallying eight sacks in 13 games.
After officially hanging up his cleats in 2022, Matthews now joins the ranks of legendary Packers players enshrined in the team’s Hall of Fame, alongside former defensive lineman Aaron Kampman. The night was a celebration of Matthews’ contributions to the franchise and a testament to his enduring legacy in the world of American football.
