The fiery Cowboys defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer took the Minnesota Vikings to task in a recent interview with Mark Craig of the Minneapolis Star Tribune. Zimmer, known for his no-nonsense approach, surprisingly held back when it came to criticizing his former quarterback Kirk Cousins. Perhaps he didn’t want to give Cousins any bulletin board material as the Cowboys gear up to face Cousins’ new team in Week 9.
However, Zimmer did not hold back his thoughts on Steelers quarterback Justin Fields. In a scathing rebuke of former Vikings general manager Rick Spielman’s decision to try and trade up for Fields in the 2021 draft, Zimmer bluntly stated that Fields “hasn’t done anything.”
The stage is set for Fields to prove Zimmer wrong when the Cowboys go head-to-head against the Steelers six weeks from now in a highly-anticipated Sunday night matchup on NBC and Peacock. While Fields may not be the starter, the Steelers are expected to have a package of plays ready for the talented quarterback.
With Zimmer in the building, Fields will have even more incentive to showcase his skills and silence his critics. If Fields puts on a show against the Cowboys, Zimmer may come to regret his candid comments and wish he had shown more restraint when discussing his former team’s quarterback situation. The drama continues to unfold as the NFL season progresses.
