Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen is gearing up for another season with high expectations of leading his team to their first Super Bowl appearance since the 1990s. However, this season brings about a significant change in the offensive lineup surrounding Allen.
Longtime top wide receiver Stefon Diggs has been traded to the Houston Texans, leaving a void in the Bills’ receiving corps. In response, the Bills drafted wide receiver Keon Coleman and signed Curtis Samuel to bolster their offensive options. Despite the changes, Allen remains optimistic about the new offensive dynamics.
In an interview with Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer as part of Pepsi’s “Make Your Gameday Epic” campaign, Allen expressed his desire to distribute the ball effectively to his new teammates and decrease his reliance on scrambling.
Allen emphasized the importance of minimizing risks associated with running the ball himself, stating, “I want to get the guys that can catch it and run a little bit faster, and a little more elusive than I can… And that’s what I plan on doing this season. At the same time, you know, if it’s there, I’ll take it.”
The addition of taller wide receivers to the Bills’ roster, including 6’3″ Keon Coleman, 6’4″ Mack Hollins, and 6’4″ Marquez Valdes-Scantling, has motivated Allen to elevate his gameplay even further.
Acknowledging his areas of improvement, Allen mentioned, “Finding completions is an area I feel like I’ll be better in this year than last… Ultimately trying to build a system where I know what my answers are and I don’t have to utilize my legs as much.”
Allen stressed the importance of balancing his mobility with his passing game, noting, “The best play for us is the scramble drill, and is utilizing my legs to then throw the ball and not so much running the ball to run.”
As Allen prepares for the upcoming season, his focus on refining his skills and forming strong connections with his new receiving targets will be crucial in the Bills’ quest for Super Bowl success.
