In a bold move last year, NFL owners gave the green light to play up to eight international games a year – but that’s just the beginning, folks!
NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, in a recent interview with the one and only Pat McAfee, revealed that the league has its sights set on expanding into new international markets and scheduling even more games in countries where the NFL fan base is rapidly growing.
“We want the world to know we’re coming, that we’re bringing football,” Goodell declared. “Our clubs have agreed to play up to eight regular-season games. We have expectations that will go well beyond that. We think we’ll be seven next year, we’re already going to Spain next year, we’ll be back in Mexico I hope by next year, so we’re really excited where the future is for us on an international basis.”
On Friday night, the NFL will make history by playing its first game in Brazil. And the plan doesn’t stop there – the league aims to bring a game to at least one new country every year, while continuing to host multiple games annually in the United Kingdom. Goodell emphasized that the NFL sees no signs of waning international interest.
“Every time we’ve done this,” Goodell said, “they want more.”
With such ambitious plans in place, it’s clear that the NFL is dead set on solidifying its presence on the global stage. Fans worldwide, get ready – American football is coming your way!
