The San Francisco 49ers were dealt a surprising blow when running back Christian McCaffrey was declared inactive for Monday night’s opener. Despite being listed as questionable leading up to the game, McCaffrey had confidently stated in his media availability that he would be playing. However, his calf strain and Achilles tendinitis ultimately kept him off the field.
Head Coach Kyle Shanahan revealed that if it had been a playoff game rather than the first of 17 regular-season games, McCaffrey would have been out there. It was a tough decision to sideline him, but one that had to be made for his health and the team’s long-term success.
Even McCaffrey himself seemed caught off guard by the news. Fellow running back Jordan Mason claimed he knew he would be starting on Friday, while McCaffrey maintained that he didn’t find out until game day.
“I prepare every week to play,” McCaffrey stated. “My mindset is always that I’m going to play. Mentally, I’m always prepared. It was a group decision, a very tough one. I hate not playing, but I see it as a strategic move that can benefit us in the long run.”
Despite the setback, McCaffrey reassured fans that the current injury is not related to the one he suffered in Week 17 of the previous season. He remains optimistic about his recovery and is determined to get back on the field as soon as possible.
Following a limited practice on Wednesday, McCaffrey expressed his eagerness to return for the upcoming Sunday game. “My mindset is I’m going to play no matter what I’m going through physically. On game day, you have to make a decision. My mentality is I’m playing this week. That’s where I’m at.”
With McCaffrey’s determination and resilience, the 49ers are hopeful that he will soon be back in action, showcasing his talent and contributing to the team’s success on the field.
