The Kansas City Chiefs are already facing reported uncertainty at the wide receiver position just two weeks into the 2024 season. Marquise “Hollywood” Brown, a key player for the Chiefs, is being placed on the injured reserve list as he prepares to undergo surgery on his sternoclavicular joint, according to a report from Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.
Matt Verderame of SI stated that Brown’s injury will likely sideline him for the majority of the 2024 season. This news comes as a tough blow for both Brown himself—who signed a one-year contract with Kansas City on March 18—and the Chiefs as a team. Throughout their recent successful run, the Chiefs have struggled with depth at the wide receiver position beyond their star tight end Travis Kelce.
With Brown out, rookie wide receiver Xavier Worthy is expected to step up and take on a larger role in the offense. Worthy, the 28th pick in this year’s draft, already showed promise in the season-opening win against the Baltimore Ravens, recording two receptions for 47 yards.
In his five years in the NFL, Brown has proven himself as a reliable target, with 313 catches for 3,644 yards and 28 touchdowns in 72 games. His absence will undoubtedly be felt on the field by the Chiefs, but it also presents an opportunity for new talent to shine. As the season progresses, the team will need to adjust and find ways to make up for the loss of their star wide receiver.
