In a recent turn of events, former New Orleans Saints player Steve Gleason finds himself battling not only Hurricane Francine, but also a medical emergency. Known for his legendary blocked punt in the team’s emotional return to the Superdome post-Hurricane Katrina, Gleason is currently in the hospital after experiencing a sudden health scare.
According to ESPN’s Katherine Terrell, Gleason was faced with a “high fever and low blood pressure” on Wednesday, prompting his doctors to urge him to seek medical attention. This news comes as a blow to Gleason, who has been courageously fighting against ALS for years.
With Hurricane Francine wreaking havoc in Louisiana, there were fears about whether emergency responders would be able to reach Gleason in time. However, Gleason’s publicist, Clare Durrett, reassured the public that despite the storm’s fury, they were able to swiftly assist Gleason and transport him to Ochsner Medical Center in Jefferson, Louisiana.
“They immediately stabilized him and transported him to Ochsner,” Durrett confirmed. “He remains there and stable. He’s continuing to be treated and we are hopeful Steve will do what Steve does and warrior through to get home as quickly as possible.”
The football community is rallying behind Gleason, who played for the Saints from 2000 to 2006. His ALS diagnosis in 2011 only strengthened his resolve, turning him into a beacon of hope and inspiration for others battling the disease.
As Gleason fights this latest battle, fans and well-wishers are sending their thoughts and prayers his way, hoping for a speedy recovery and a return to his beloved home in New Orleans. In the game of life, Steve Gleason has proven time and time again that he is a true warrior, ready to face any challenge head-on with unwavering determination and courage.
