In a game against Buffalo, Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa suffered a head injury late in the third quarter while trying to extend a drive by diving headfirst into Damar Hamlin. Despite moving the chains, the play came at a cost as Tagovailoa was forced to exit the game due to the injury. The Dolphins’ offense struggled to convert the opportunity into points, eventually turning the ball over after backup quarterback Skylar Thompson was sacked on fourth-and-goal.
Thompson, who took over for Tagovailoa, expressed frustration in the post-game press conference, especially when asked about his teammate’s condition. The 27-year-old backup will likely take on the starting role as Tagovailoa goes through the NFL’s concussion protocol. “It makes me sick,” Thompson said. “In my position, you never want the opportunity to come with something like that. Have a lot of love for Tua. Built a great relationship with him. And you care about the person more than the player. Everybody in the organization would say the same thing. So really just praying for Tua, and hopefully everything will come out alright.”
After Tagovailoa’s injury was confirmed as a concussion, support poured in from around the league, with stars like Patrick Mahomes and JJ Watt offering their well-wishes on social media. Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel provided a bit of relief by stating that Tagovailoa was alert and in good spirits in the locker room despite the injury.
