In January, Dennis Allen embarked on a mission to revolutionize the New Orleans Saints’ offensive foundation, a task not taken lightly in a generation. The head coach was determined to shake things up and after an exhaustive search for a new coordinator, he decided to strip the system down to its core.
“There was logic to it,” Allen explains.
For 16 seasons, Sean Payton, the legendary coach of the Saints, had meticulously constructed and operated a historically great system. Pete Carmichael Jr. took over as the top offensive lieutenant and coordinator in 2009, after Doug Marrone departed for Syracuse. Carmichael held the position for 15 years, eventually becoming the play-caller in 2022 when Payton stepped down and Allen was promoted.
The scheme put in place by Payton and Carmichael had undoubtedly yielded results. However, after two seasons without a playoff berth, Allen felt it was time for a change. One glaring issue was the complexity of the offense. While Payton, Carmichael, and Drew Brees were able to handle the vast playbook with ease, the game was evolving towards simpler, faster schemes that were easier on players. The Saints’ playbook had grown dense and convoluted over the years.
“What worked for Brees & Co. for all those years didn’t work the same for younger guys,” Allen observed.
In essence, Allen sought a fresh perspective to unravel the intricacies of the Saints’ offense. He wanted to streamline the system and make it more accessible for the new generation of players.
The process of reimagining the offensive foundation was not an easy task, but Allen was determined to pave a new path for the Saints. It was a bold move, but one that was necessary to keep the team competitive in a rapidly changing league.
As the new season approaches, all eyes will be on the revamped Saints’ offense and how the changes implemented by Allen will impact the team’s performance on the field. Only time will tell if the gamble pays off, but one thing is certain – the Saints are prepared to write a new chapter in their storied franchise history.
