As we embark on the second week of the 2024 fantasy football season, it’s important to not get too wrapped up in the early-season illusion of drawing conclusions from a small sample size. This holds true for all positions, whether it be quarterback, running back, or defense. However, there are a few certainties that we can point out with confidence.
For fantasy managers, there are definitely some matchups to exploit with team defenses. The New York Giants showed signs of improvement offensively in Week 2, but it was likely more due to the poor performance of the Commanders defense than any actual progress made by Big Blue. The Carolina Panthers, on the other hand, have proven to be a prime target – with their abysmal offensive output leading head coach Dave Canales to start Andy Dalton at quarterback.
In terms of surprises, the once dominant Dallas defense that shone in Week 1 was torn to shreds by the New Orleans Saints in Week 2, giving up over 400 yards of offense and 44 points at home. The Baltimore Ravens, who fell to the Las Vegas Raiders in their first two games, are barely hanging on to a spot in the top-20 fantasy defenses.
It’s likely that the Ravens and Cowboys will bounce back and improve, while the Panthers and Giants will continue to struggle. However, until we have a larger sample size of games to analyze, defensive matchups remain somewhat speculative.
But who doesn’t enjoy a bit of speculation, especially when it comes to fantasy football?
Week 1 was challenging for the Browns defense, with some of the blame falling on the ineptitude of the offense that failed to produce. However, in Week 2 against Jacksonville, the Browns’ defense – which led the league in fewest yards allowed last season – came alive with four sacks and a safety in an 18-13 victory. Last season, the Giants allowed a staggering 85 sacks and the most fantasy points in the NFC to opposing defenses. Despite putting up a fight in their last game, the Giants were thrashed 28-6 by the Vikings in Week 1, highlighting their glaring weakness in the offensive line. Myles Garrett, the star edge rusher for the Browns, has notched sacks in the first two games and is poised to continue his streak this Sunday in Cleveland.
In conclusion, while early-season results can be insightful, it’s crucial to maintain perspective and not overreact. As the season progresses, we can expect some teams to rise and others to fall, making fantasy football all the more unpredictable and exciting.
