The Kansas City Chiefs are off to a 2-0 start, but there is still room for improvement. Star quarterback Patrick Mahomes did not have his best day as the Chiefs narrowly defeated the Cincinnati Bengals 26-25 on Sunday. Mahomes only threw for 151 yards and had two touchdowns matched by two interceptions. With the possibility of a first-ever Super Bowl “three-peat” on the line for Kansas City in 2024, Mahomes is being warned that his performance against Cincinnati was not up to par.
During the game, head coach Andy Reid expressed his frustration with the Chiefs’ turnovers to CBS Sports’ Tracy Wolfson. Despite trailing the Bengals 16-10 at halftime, Kansas City managed to rally and secure the win, albeit with some luck on their side — including a defensive pass interference call in the final minutes and surviving three turnovers.
Reid emphasized the importance of taking care of the football as the Chiefs prepare to face the Atlanta Falcons in Week 3. Kansas City has turned the ball over four times in two games, and Reid knows that in order to win another Super Bowl, the team must play cleaner football and develop better habits.
“Turnovers, they finish you. They seldom give you an opportunity to win the game. We came out with a win, but we’ve got to take care of business there,” said Reid.
Mahomes’ aggressive style of play often involves taking risks and making daring throws with his strong arm. Despite his talent, he threw a career-high 14 interceptions last year, and has already thrown three in the first two games of this season. The challenge now lies in facing Atlanta’s defense and leading the Chiefs to a 3-0 start, with Mahomes undoubtedly feeling motivated by Reid’s call for improvement.
