The Detroit Lions were dealt a blow on Wednesday as their leading tackler, linebacker Alex Anzalone, was unable to participate in practice due to a concussion sustained in their previous game against the Buccaneers. Head coach Dan Campbell expressed concern about Anzalone’s availability for their upcoming matchup against the Arizona Cardinals, highlighting the impact of his absence on the team.
“Anytime you lose somebody like Alex, if he’s not able to go, that’s going to hurt,” Campbell lamented, as reported by the team’s website. “I mean, Alex is a hell of a player for us. And so, we’ll just take it as it comes with that, but I’ve got all the confidence in the world with Jack and really all of those guys.”
In addition to Anzalone, several other key players were sidelined for practice. Cornerback Terrion Arnold was out with an illness, while guard Graham Glasgow, safety Ifeatu Melifonwu, and cornerback Ennis Rakestraw were also unable to participate due to knee, ankle, and hamstring injuries, respectively. Safety Kerby Joseph and wide receiver Isaiah Williams were limited in their involvement due to back and abdominal issues.
Despite the setbacks, there were some positive updates on the injury front for the Lions. Defensive end Marcus Davenport returned to full participation after dealing with a groin injury, providing a boost to the team’s defensive line. Wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown, who had been nursing a quad injury, was also back on the field as a full participant, offering hope for the team’s passing game.
As the Lions continue to navigate their way through a challenging season, the absence of key players like Anzalone poses a significant challenge for the team. However, with capable replacements ready to step up and contribute, Detroit remains determined to overcome adversity and compete at the highest level possible.
