Detroit Lions defensive end Aidan Hutchinson is making waves in the NFL this season, continuing his impressive performance from last year. With 5.5 sacks in the first two games of the season and 5.0 sacks in the final two games of the 2023 regular season, Hutchinson is on track to potentially break an NFL record on Sunday.
If Hutchinson notches 2.5 sacks against the Cardinals, he will set a new NFL record for the most sacks in a five-game stretch since the league began officially tracking the statistic in 1982. His total of 10.5 sacks in four games is just shy of the current record held by Michael Strahan, who had 12.5 sacks in a five-game stretch during the 2001 season when he set the single-season record of 22.5 sacks.
Joining Strahan in the history books are Hall of Famers Richard Dent and Derrick Thomas, as well as Aldon Smith, who was once on a trajectory to the Hall of Fame before encountering personal and legal issues that derailed his career. Hutchinson, however, appears to be on a different path.
At just 24 years old, Hutchinson is already drawing comparisons to future Hall of Famers based on his performance on the field. Unlike some of his predecessors, he seems to have no off-field concerns impacting his game. With his exceptional play and promising future, Hutchinson is shaping up to be one of the all-time greats in the NFL.
