In the early stages of the 2024 season, one of the most captivating narratives has been the resurgence of Chargers running back J.K. Dobbins. Leading the league in rushing with an impressive 266 yards on just 27 carries, Dobbins is making a name for himself as one of the premier backs in the NFL.
This success is not a recent development for Dobbins. During his rookie season in 2020 with the Ravens, he showcased his talent by averaging six yards per carry and racking up 805 yards on 134 attempts. Unfortunately, injuries, including a torn Achilles tendon in Week 1 of the 2023 season, hindered his progress. However, Dobbins is now on track to solidify his status as one of the best running backs in the league.
The ultimate test for Dobbins will come against the Steelers on Sunday. Despite the challenge, Dobbins has already proven himself against Pittsburgh on three separate occasions. In 2020, he tallied 113 yards on just 15 carries. Then in 2022, after missing six games, he returned to Pittsburgh and gained 120 yards on 15 carries. Three weeks later, he added another 93 yards on 17 carries against the Steelers, totaling 326 rushing yards in three career games against them.
It’s no wonder that the Ravens were eager to bring Dobbins back after his injury-plagued season. The decision ultimately came down to a choice between the Harbaugh brothers, with Dobbins feeling called to play for Coach Jim over returning to Baltimore.
“Baltimore wanted me to come back, but I just prayed on it, you know?” Dobbins shared with PFT after a recent win over the Panthers. “God told me this is the place for me, and I need to go play with Coach Jim.”
The similarities between John and Jim Harbaugh have undoubtedly played a role in Dobbins’ decision-making process. As he continues to shine on the field, Dobbins is proving that he made the right choice in following his instincts and aligning himself with the right coach for his career.
