In a surprising turn of events, Travis Kelce, star tight end for the Kansas City Chiefs, has been struggling to make his mark in the first three games of the season. Despite the Chiefs’ undefeated record of 3-0, Kelce has only managed to catch four passes for a mere 30 yards and has yet to find the end zone.
Kelce’s struggles were highlighted in Sunday night’s game against the Atlanta Falcons, where he failed to shine once again. This comes after a lackluster performance in Week 2 against the Bengals, where he only caught one pass for five yards. With a total of just 69 receiving yards on the season so far, Kelce has not lived up to the high expectations set for him in the Chiefs’ offense.
Even Patrick Mahomes, the star quarterback for the Chiefs, has weighed in on Kelce’s difficulties. Mahomes acknowledged that defenses are focusing heavily on limiting Kelce’s impact on the game, with two or three defenders assigned to cover him at all times. Despite the challenges, Mahomes expressed confidence in Kelce’s ability to bounce back and make a difference on the field.
“It’s crazy because the respect factor teams have for Travis is unreal, and it’s well deserved,” Mahomes stated. “We’re calling a lot of plays for Travis and it’s like two or three (defenders) are going to him. That’s the great thing about him is he wants to make an impact on the game but he wants to win at the end of the day. I’m going to do my best to keep feeding him the ball whenever he’s there, whenever he’s open. I think the more Rashee (Rice) makes plays, the more we’re able to run the football, the more we can get (Xavier) Worthy involved, I think that’s going to open Travis up more. People are really emphasizing taking him away and that’s getting other guys open.”
Looking ahead to Week 4, Kelce will have a chance to redeem himself as the Chiefs face the Los Angeles Chargers on the road. Kelce has had success against the Chargers in the past, and he will be looking to capitalize on that history to break out of his current slump. Fans will be eagerly awaiting to see if Kelce can return to his dominant form and help lead the Chiefs to another victory.
