The Jacksonville Jaguars made a bold move in the offseason by signing Trevor Lawrence to a contract extension that elevated him to the ranks of the elite quarterbacks in the league. However, the young quarterback has yet to live up to that status in the early part of this season.
In their first game, Lawrence and the Jaguars squandered a 10-point lead to the Miami Dolphins. The following week, they were crushed by the Cleveland Browns. But it was their abysmal performance in a 47-10 loss to the Buffalo Bills on Monday night that truly highlighted their struggles. Lawrence threw an interception in the second quarter that effectively sealed their fate, finishing the night with 21 completions on 38 attempts for a paltry 178 yards.
To make matters worse, Lawrence has failed to complete 60 percent of his passes in any of the team’s first three games. The Jaguars have now lost the last eight games that Lawrence has started, a disappointing streak for the top pick in the 2021 draft.
“I’ve got to play really well for us to win,” Lawrence acknowledged, reflecting on his performance. “That’s the NFL. The quarterback has to play well every week in order to give us a shot to win. I don’t feel like I’ve done that consistently enough. So I put that on myself.”
While Lawrence’s lackluster rookie season could initially be attributed to the turmoil surrounding former head coach Urban Meyer, that excuse no longer holds water. The Jaguars must now dig deep to uncover the root of their issues if they hope to avoid regret over their investment in Lawrence as the cornerstone of their future.
