The New York Jets are making adjustments to their coaching staff following the dismissal of Robert Saleh. Interim head coach Jeff Ulbrich wasted no time in revealing the changes during his first press conference on Thursday, announcing that Nathaniel Hackett would no longer be handling play-calling duties on offense.
Instead, the responsibility will fall on quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator Todd Downing. Ulbrich explained the decision by stating, “This is more a byproduct of a different take on things. I’m not saying it’s a better or worse take on things by any means. Just a different take on things. A fresh approach. Ultimately, Todd will have the full say on the gameplan and ultimately the plays that are called within the game.”
Downing brings experience as an offensive coordinator for the Oakland Raiders in 2017 and the Tennessee Titans in 2021 and 2022. The results were mixed, with the ’17 Raiders ranking 23rd in scoring and 17th in offensive yards, while the ’21 Titans were 15th in points and 17th in yards. The ’22 Titans saw a decline, finishing 28th and 30th in those respective categories.
As for Hackett’s new role, it remains uncertain. Ulbrich hinted that Hackett is open to any assignment, especially given the uncertain nature of his position while Saleh was still in charge. Ulbrich praised Hackett, saying, “Just another testament to the human being that Nathaniel Hackett is. The fact that he’s going to give us everything in his body and heart and soul and he’s going to continue to be a big part of the success we’re going to have going forward from an offensive perspective. I feel so fortunate that he is staying with us. Here’s a guy that’s been a head coach in this league and willing to do whatever it takes. The true heart of a servant. I can’t speak enough good things about him.”
The shake-up in coordinator roles adds an intriguing dynamic to the Jets’ coaching staff as they strive to turn their season around under new leadership. It will be interesting to see how these changes impact the team’s performance on the field moving forward.
