In what can only be described as a nightmarish outing for Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen, the young signal-caller found himself in the headlines for all the wrong reasons after his dismal performance against the Houston Texans on Sunday.
Not only did Allen struggle mightily on the field, but he also raised eyebrows when he was briefly evaluated for a concussion in the medical tent after a jarring hit that left him shaken. Despite concerns over his health, Allen remarkably returned to the game almost immediately, sparking a heated debate about player safety and the handling of head injuries in the NFL.
The league and the NFL Players Association were quick to address the situation, announcing on Friday that the proper concussion protocol was followed in Allen’s case. In a statement via Tom Pelissero of NFL Network, the league and union confirmed that the reports from the medical consultants and booth spotters supported the handling of Allen’s injury during the game.
“The NFL and NFLPA have received the reports from the Unaffiliated Neurotrama Consultant and Booth Spotters and those reports confirm that the steps required by the concussion protocol were followed in the evaluation and clearance of… Allen in last Sunday’s game,” the statement read.
Despite the off-field drama, Allen’s on-field performance was equally disappointing, as he completed just nine passes out of 30 attempts for a measly 131 yards and one touchdown—the lowest completion percentage of his career. With questions swirling about his ability to lead the Bills to victory, all eyes are now on Allen as he looks to bounce back from this rough outing.
Buffalo, with Allen at the helm, is set to face off against the New York Jets on Monday night in East Rutherford, N.J., in what is sure to be a crucial matchup for both teams. As Allen looks to put this week behind him and focus on the task at hand, all eyes will be on him to see if he can rise to the occasion and deliver a much-needed win for the Bills.
