In a surprising turn of events, the New York Jets made a bold move by agreeing to trade for star wide receiver Davante Adams on Tuesday. This acquisition suddenly created a logjam at the top of the wide receiver depth chart for the Jets.
Currently, Garrett Wilson, Allen Lazard, and Mike Williams have been the top three wideouts for the Jets this season. However, with the addition of Adams, it seems that the Jets have decided that Williams is the odd man out. Reports from Pro Football Talk indicated that the Jets have begun shopping Williams to other teams who may be interested in bolstering their receiving corps.
Interim head coach Jeff Ulbrich addressed the situation at a press conference, acknowledging that the team is still in the process of sorting everything out. “I think we’ll figure it out in the next couple of days how all these pieces fit together,” Ulbrich stated. “It’s an exciting and good problem to have. We’ve got a lot of different guys with a lot of different skill sets that can do a lot of different things.”
Williams, who signed with the Jets this past offseason, has had a modest season with 10 catches for 145 yards. Notably, he was the target for Aaron Rodgers’s late interception in Monday night’s game against the Bills. Rodgers himself pointed out that Williams ran the wrong route on the play, potentially contributing to the Jets’ decision to explore trading him.
As the Jets navigate through this roster dilemma, it will be interesting to see how they ultimately resolve the situation and what the future holds for Mike Williams in New York. Stay tuned for further updates as the team continues to shape its roster for the remainder of the season.
