Get ready Steelers fans, because this week we are going back in time to honor the legendary Super Bowl IX team! The Pittsburgh Steelers will be donning throwback jerseys to celebrate the 50th anniversary of their first championship in the 1970s.
Steelers president Art Rooney II expressed his excitement for this special occasion, stating, “As we approach the 50th anniversary of Super Bowl IX, we think it is a good time to celebrate the team that ushered in an era of great success. We’re excited about being able to celebrate that pivotal time in Steelers history and honor the team that started it all.”
These throwback jerseys will showcase block numbers and letters on the classic black jersey, paying homage to the 1974 season which marked the beginning of a decade of championships for the Steelers. The helmets will also feature gray facemasks, just like the ones worn back in 1974.
Special teams captain Miles Killebrew emphasized the importance of honoring the Steelers legacy, saying, “Something that is so important being a Steeler is the legacy that comes with being a Steeler. We are always talking about the history of this team and the past. And coach [Mike] Tomlin does a great job of bringing guys back, legacy players who have been here. We see guys who have been on some of those teams, and we respect them. Their pictures are up. The trophies are up. We are always reminded of the history that is the Pittsburgh Steelers, that culture of winning. To be able to put on those jerseys is another physical reminder of the shoulders of the giants that we stand on.”
The jerseys will also feature a commemorative patch honoring the 50th anniversary of Super Bowl IX, with the team’s Super Bowl IX ring incorporated into the design. And if that wasn’t enough, the Steelers will be honoring the Super Bowl IX team at halftime of the game against the Jets, with the team’s annual Alumni Dinner taking place at Acrisure Stadium.
This will be the fifth time the Steelers have worn this particular throwback jersey, having previously done so in 2018, 2019, 2022, and 2023. So get ready to witness a blast from the past as the Steelers pay tribute to their historic roots on the football field this week!
