The Atlanta Falcons are currently flying high with a 4-2 record, sitting pretty at the top of the NFC South alongside the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Kirk Cousins, the Falcons’ star quarterback, has been setting the field ablaze with his stellar play, ranking fourth in the NFL in passing yards and tied for eighth in touchdown passes.
As the Falcons gear up to face off against the Seattle Seahawks this Sunday, Cousins took to the press conference to share his thoughts on the challenges of playing on the road in the NFL. In a moment of eloquence, Cousins quoted a line from a hip-hop song, saying, “My teammate used to say walking into your trap, take over your trap was the line he would say. And so that’s kind of what it is. You go into someone else’s stadium and you try to assert yourself. That’s what everyone’s trying to do when they go on the road. It’s hard to do but that’s certainly the goal.”
Interestingly, Cousins revealed that the line he quoted was something he had heard from a teammate in the past. The curious part is that the line is actually from Bankroll Fresh, a late rapper from Atlanta, known for his song “Take Over Your Trap” featuring 2 Chainz and Skooly. This raises the question of whether Cousins was aware of the origins of the quote, given that he was drafted in 2012 and would have been in his 20s when the song was released.
Regardless of where he first heard it, the fact that Cousins incorporated the trap house metaphor seamlessly into his press conference in 2024 is a testament to his knack for drawing parallels between hip-hop and football. It’s just another example of Kirk Cousins being the unique and multifaceted player that fans have come to admire.
