In the world of American Football, the performance of star quarterback Patrick Mahomes has been stirring up a storm of discussion. Despite some less-than-stellar numbers this season, San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan is not quick to jump on the bandwagon claiming Mahomes is in a slump. In fact, Shanahan remains steadfast in his belief that Mahomes is still a major threat on the field.
“Everyone says ‘down year’ just because their numbers aren’t crazy, but Pat is as good as it gets,” Shanahan confidently stated. “He’s been as good as it gets since the first year that he got to play. All their games, I think, except for one, have come down to the last possession, and he’s as good as anyone in that last possession.”
While Mahomes has faced some struggles this season, there are still some positives to pull from his performances. His completion rate has soared to 69.4 percent, a career-best achievement, despite the six touchdowns being offset by six interceptions. The offensive inconsistencies of the Chiefs extend beyond just Mahomes’ passing game, with their running game sitting at 19th in the league and red zone conversion rates a significant concern, ranking 29th. In comparison, the 49ers are not faring much better, tied for 25th place in red zone efficiency alongside the Giants and Eagles.
“Makeshift” has been ground zero in the discussion about Mahomes and Chiefs performance this Sunday’s game against the 49ers. Shanahan is not quick to fall into the trap of doubting Mahomes’ abilities, stating, “Their running numbers aren’t quite what they were last year. Their red zone isn’t real high. So I think that equates to numbers, but Pat is Pat, and he’s as good as it gets, and I don’t see that changing at all.”
As the stage is set for the Chiefs to visit Levi’s Stadium, all eyes are on Mahomes to see if he can silence the critics and remind the world why he is one of the best in the game. The debate rages on, but one thing is clear – Mahomes is still Mahomes, and that alone is worth tuning in for.
