In a lackluster performance by the Saints, a game devoid of any standout moments, one particular incident stood out – and not in a good way.
Picture this: with just four seconds remaining in the first half, the Saints decided to call a timeout. And what did they do next? They simply took a knee and headed to the locker room for intermission. Has anyone ever seen such a bizarre sequence of events on the football field? A running clock, a timeout, and then a nonchalant kneel down?
Coach Dennis Allen shed some light on the bewildering situation. According to a report by Rod Walker of Nola.com, Allen revealed that it was the offensive coordinator, Klint Kubiak, who called for the untimely timeout.
“He got a little excited over there on the sideline,” Allen remarked about Kubiak’s actions. “He and I discussed that. That won’t be a problem moving forward.”
While Kubiak may have been the only one feeling any kind of excitement, the rest of the team and their fans certainly did not share the sentiment. The Saints appeared lackluster on the field, the scoreline was one-sided, and the crowd had already begun to disperse early.
It was supposed to be a memorable night for coach Sean Payton as he returned to the sidelines. However, it turned out to be far from great for quarterback Drew Brees, who was set to be honored with induction into the team’s Hall of Fame.
In the end, it was a forgettable game for the Saints, with the bizarre timeout incident serving as a perfect encapsulation of their disappointing performance on the night.
