In a brutal showdown between bitter NFC East rivals, the New York Giants were left reeling after a humiliating 28-3 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles at MetLife Stadium on Sunday. The highly anticipated matchup quickly turned into a one-sided affair as the Eagles dominated the field.
Former Giants star Saquon Barkley came back to haunt his old team with a stellar performance, rushing for 176 yards and scoring a touchdown on 17 carries. Meanwhile, Giants quarterback Daniel Jones struggled to get anything going, completing just 14 of 21 passes for a measly 99 yards with no touchdowns.
Jones’ lackluster performance led to his early exit from the game, as backup Drew Lock took over in the fourth quarter. Questions swirled about whether Jones was benched for his poor showing or if Lock was simply getting garbage time minutes.
Giants head coach Brian Daboll addressed the decision to replace Jones in a postgame press conference, admitting that the team had been outcoached and outplayed. Daboll defended his choice to make a change in the fourth quarter, stating, “Daniel (Jones) will be the quarterback going forward. But obviously, we didn’t do enough offensively, hardly had any yards, no points… Just not a good day, all the way around. No excuses. Gotta play better, coach better.”
The only bright spot for the Giants came in the form of Greg Joseph’s 38-yard field goal in the second quarter, which was the team’s lone source of points in the lopsided defeat. Despite the disappointing outcome, Daboll remains committed to Jones as the team’s quarterback moving forward.
