The drama surrounding Haason Reddick and the New York Jets has reached its conclusion, at least for now, with the star edge rusher agreeing to an adjusted contract on Sunday morning, as reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
Reddick, who was acquired by the Jets from the Philadelphia Eagles in the offseason, had been unhappy with his contract. The standoff led to a holdout that started in the summer and a trade request made to the Jets back in August. Just last week, the Jets allowed Reddick a brief window to explore potential trade partners.
While a long-term contract has yet to be finalized, the Jets have made a significant gesture by waiving over $12 million in fines that Reddick had accumulated during his holdout in order to facilitate his return to the team.
“We will continue to work towards a long-term extension with the Jets,” his agent Drew Rosenhaus told Schefter.
Reddick’s original contract was set to pay him $14.25 million in base salary for the final year of his three-year, $45 million deal signed with the Eagles in 2022. Reports surfaced earlier this month that Reddick’s agency had parted ways with him as a client.
Jets owner Woody Johnson has reportedly been heavily involved in the negotiations, with Rosenhaus stating that the Jets never intended to trade Reddick away.
The resolution of this saga provides some clarity for both Reddick and the Jets as they look to move forward and focus on the upcoming season. The adjustments to Reddick’s contract represent a compromise that allows him to return to the field while discussions for a more permanent solution continue behind the scenes.
