The Kansas City Chiefs received some concerning news regarding wide receiver Marquise Brown, as it was reported that he suffered a sternoclavicular posterior dislocation. Brown had to spend Saturday night in a hospital in Jacksonville before being released on Sunday morning. As a result, he was unable to attend Monday’s practice.
Head coach Andy Reid provided an update on Brown’s condition, stating, “They were able to get the joint back in place without surgery, which is a positive. We’ll just see on the recovery. He’s back in Kansas City now. He stayed over in Jacksonville until they got that thing situated.”
Reid also drew parallels between Brown’s injury and former Chiefs wide receiver Tyreek Hill’s situation in the 2019 regular-season opener, where Hill missed four games before returning. However, Reid did not commit to a timeline for Brown’s return, especially with the regular-season opener against the Baltimore Ravens approaching on Sept. 5.
“We’ll see how that goes,” Reid said.
Despite Brown’s absence, Reid expressed confidence in the team’s depth at the position. The Chiefs had signed Brown to a one-year deal in March, and also drafted Xavier Worthy in the first round to bolster the wide receiver group.
“The positive there is he’s going to be back,” Reid said. “But without him in there – his experience and that in the league – but we’ve also got other guys who can step in and play. We’ll be OK there. We’re pulling for him to get back.”
Worthy echoed his coach’s sentiments, saying, “Obviously, he’s a key to our offense, so just getting him back. I think he’s in pretty good spirits. He’s just looking to come back and get back ready to work.”
In Brown’s absence, the Chiefs have options to fill the void alongside Worthy and Rashee Rice. Players like Skyy Moore, Kadarius Toney, Mecole Hardman, and Justin Watson could see increased reps with the first-team offense during practices. Hopefully, Brown can recover quickly and rejoin the team soon.
