Cameron Heyward, the stalwart defensive lineman for the Pittsburgh Steelers, was adamant about securing a contract that would ensure he finished his illustrious career with the black and gold. And just in the nick of time, his wish was granted.
Reports from ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler indicate that Heyward and the Steelers reached an agreement on a lucrative three-year, $45 million contract. This deal, which includes $29 million in new money and $16 million fully guaranteed, including a hefty $15 million signing bonus, solidifies Heyward’s future with the team.
At 35 years old, Heyward had $16 million remaining on the final year of his previous contract. However, with this new agreement in place, he can now set his sights on completing his career in a Steelers uniform.
During the offseason, Heyward expressed his desire to be a “one-helmet” player, signaling his commitment to the Steelers organization. Despite this, he also made it clear that he intends to play for three more seasons. With the terms of his new deal, both goals seem within reach.
With his contract now extended through 2026, Heyward can continue to be a cornerstone of the Steelers’ defense for years to come. Since being drafted in the first round in 2011, he has emerged as a leader and the heart and soul of the team. This was further solidified on Monday when he was elected as a team captain for the 10th time in his career.
The Steelers have demonstrated their commitment to Heyward, recognizing his value both on and off the field. As he embarks on this new chapter in his career, fans can look forward to seeing the veteran lineman continue to make an impact for the team he has called home for over a decade.
