In the five years since his retirement from the NFL, ex-running back Marshawn Lynch has been making waves in various arenas. From his roles on the silver screen, such as playing a teacher in the farcical film “Bottoms” in 2023, to his appearances on “College GameDay,” where he picked games during the show’s first visit to Berkeley, California, Lynch has been keeping busy.
However, Lynch seems to have set his sights on something bigger. During a recent episode of the podcast “Politickin’,” which featured Lynch, his agent Doug Hendrickson, and California Governor Gavin Newsom, the former California running back hinted at a potential run for mayor of Oakland.
“It might be a possibility,” Lynch revealed to someone recently.
Oakland has faced challenges in its recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic, and has been making headlines in the sports world as it battled against Athletics owner John Fisher to retain its MLB team. The city’s current mayor, Sheng Thao, has been embroiled in scandals and is now facing a recall just two years after being elected.
“We don’t want to jump the gun just yet, from what I was told,” Lynch explained. “I got a good internal team, you know, and I want to make sure I take this offline with my internal team and make sure this is something that we really wanna do.”
With Lynch considering a potential political career, it could mark a new chapter in his already diverse post-football endeavors. Stay tuned to see if the former NFL star makes a run for mayor and how it could impact the city of Oakland.
