In a surprising move, the Minnesota Vikings decided to part ways with defensive lineman Jalen Redmond, announcing his departure on Friday. This decision leaves just five defensive linemen on the Vikings’ roster, with Jonathan Bullard, Harrison Phillips, Levi Drake Rodriguez, Taki Taimani, and Jerry Tillery as the remaining members of the unit.
Redmond, who had signed with the Vikings on June 18, saw limited action during his brief stint with the team. In his first career appearances, he played 23 defensive snaps and one on special teams, managing to tally one tackle and one sack in two games.
Prior to joining the Vikings, Redmond had been showcasing his skills with the UFL’s Arlington Renegades in the spring. In four games with the Renegades, he recorded impressive numbers with 18 tackles, five tackles for loss, and 4.5 sacks.
Interestingly, Redmond’s journey to the NFL began back in 2023 when he signed as an undrafted free agent with the Carolina Panthers after a standout college career at Oklahoma. Although he spent the offseason program with the Panthers, he was unfortunately waived by the team last August.
During his time as a Sooner, Redmond proved to be a force on the field, racking up 71 tackles, 31.5 tackles for loss, 14 sacks, a forced fumble, and two fumble recoveries in the 36 games he played from 2018 to 2022.
With his release from the Vikings, it remains to be seen where Redmond’s football journey will take him next. His potential and talent are undeniable, and it will be interesting to see how he bounces back from this setback in his promising career.
