The Minnesota Vikings have beefed up their stable of running backs with a key acquisition. According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, the Vikings have traded for running back Cam Akers and a 2026 seventh-round pick from the Houston Texans in exchange for a 2026 conditional sixth-round pick.
Akers is no stranger to Vikings coach Kevin O’Connell, having played under him for two seasons with the Los Angeles Rams when O’Connell was the offensive coordinator. Akers joined the Vikings last season via a midseason trade and will now reunite with his former coach in Minnesota.
In his limited action with the Vikings last season, Akers rushed 38 times for 138 yards and a touchdown. He has put up similar numbers for the Texans this year, with 40 carries for 147 yards and a score in five games.
The addition of Akers will provide valuable depth behind starting running back Aaron Jones, who left the Vikings’ Week 5 win over the New York Jets early due to a hip injury. Ty Chandler has been filling in as the backup, but his production has been lackluster, averaging only 3.5 yards per carry on 42 attempts for 147 yards.
Pelissero reports that the Vikings’ move to acquire Akers is not a reflection of any long-term concerns about Jones’ availability. In fact, Jones could be back on the field as soon as Sunday against the Detroit Lions.
With Akers now in the fold, the Vikings look to have a solid running back rotation to lean on as they push for success in the remainder of the season. The depth and experience that Akers brings to the team could prove to be a valuable asset in their quest for a playoff berth.
