In the midst of a recent uproar surrounding gun-related celebrations in the NFL, Commissioner Roger Goodell made a bold statement warning players against mimicking shooting guns during games. Goodell emphasized the league’s longstanding policy prohibiting such actions and vowed to continue enforcing it.
“It’s a long-standing policy and we are going to enforce that,” Goodell asserted on Tuesday. “Troy (Vincent) had a direct conversation with the union I think just last week about it. We’re going to continue on that focus. We don’t think it’s appropriate in those circumstances and sends the wrong messages. So, we’ll continue to do that.”
Throughout the first six weeks of the NFL season, a number of players have faced penalties and fines for their gun-themed celebrations, which the league categorizes as a “violent gesture” under its unsportsmanlike conduct policy.
The incident started with Atlanta Falcons wide receiver Drake London, who was disciplined for mimicking a gun firing after scoring a touchdown against the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 2. London received a hefty fine of $14,069 for his actions.
Following London’s penalty, other players including Dallas Cowboys receiver CeeDee Lamb, New Orleans Saints defensive backs Marshon Lattimore and Alontae Taylor, and New York Jets receiver Allen Lazard have also been penalized for similar gun-related celebrations.
In addition to finger guns, the NFL also disapproves of players making other violent gestures such as throat-slashing motions or gang signs. The league is taking a strong stance against any behavior that could be interpreted as promoting violence or sending negative messages.
As the season progresses, players will need to be mindful of their actions on the field and adhere to the league’s strict policies regarding celebrations. The NFL is committed to upholding a standard of professionalism and sportsmanship, and will not tolerate any behavior that goes against these principles.
The message is clear – players must choose their celebrations wisely and avoid any actions that could result in fines or penalties. Goodell’s warning serves as a reminder that there are consequences for inappropriate behavior, and the NFL will not hesitate to take action against those who violate the rules.
