In a whirlwind of uncertainty at the quarterback position, the New Orleans Saints find themselves in a situation that is far from the norm in the NFL. With a total of four signal callers who are vying for the starting position in Week Eight, the Saints are facing a unique and challenging scenario.
The primary starter, Derek Carr, is dealing with an oblique injury that has sidelined him for the past two games. While Carr is slated to start against the Chargers next Sunday if healthy, his status remains up in the air as he awaits clearance from the medical staff.
In Carr’s absence, Taysom Hill has stepped up to the challenge, but he too is nursing a rib injury that could potentially keep him out of the lineup. When questioned about the likelihood of either Carr or Hill playing against the Chargers, Saints coach Dennis Allen admitted that he is uncertain at this point.
“I think it’s possible, and I think it’s probably more likely that Taysom would be ready before Derek, but we’ve got 10 days and we’ll look at it and let it play out,” Allen stated.
Adding to the mix, Spencer Rattler got the start on Thursday night but failed to impress. In a turn of events, Jake Haener entered the game late and immediately made an impact by throwing a touchdown pass. Allen hinted that Haener’s performance may have implications on the depth chart moving forward.
“That was good to see,” Allen remarked regarding Haener’s play. “We’ll evaluate the tape, we’ll look at it and see what we need to do, and we’ll have a plan moving forward.”
The uncertainty surrounding the quarterback position is less than ideal for the Saints, but they are left with no choice but to make a decision amongst the quartet of quarterbacks. With the clock ticking towards next Sunday, the Saints will need to make a definitive choice as they navigate through this uncharted territory.
