San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Ricky Pearsall is set to make his NFL debut this Sunday, a return that seemed uncertain after he was shot during an attempted robbery back on Aug. 31. Head coach Kyle Shanahan shared the news of Pearsall’s comeback with reporters on Friday, marking a remarkable turnaround for the rookie.
Pearsall’s journey back to the football field began when he was en route to a signing event and found himself in the middle of a dangerous situation. The suspected shooter allegedly tried to steal Pearsall’s watch, leading to a struggle for the suspect’s weapon that left both Pearsall and the assailant wounded from gunshots. Despite the harrowing incident, Pearsall managed to stay composed and even walked to the ambulance on his own before receiving medical attention. He was later reported to be in stable condition that same night.
The perpetrator, a 17-year-old, faced charges of attempted murder, assault with a semi-automatic firearm, and robbery after the altercation. Fortunately, both he and Pearsall survived their injuries, with Pearsall taking a bullet through his chest that initially put him on the physically unable to perform list as the NFL season kicked off.
Now, after 50 days of recovery and rehabilitation, Pearsall has been activated by the Niners in preparation for their Week 7 matchup against the Chiefs. Shanahan’s decision to include him in the lineup speaks to Pearsall’s determination and courage in bouncing back from a life-threatening experience.
“It is nothing short of remarkable that Pearsall has gotten back to the gridiron after such a scary, life-threatening incident,” said a close source to the team, highlighting the resilience and strength of the young receiver as he prepares to take the field once again.écruits of his labor.
