The Denver Broncos quarterback competition heated up with rookie Bo Nix making a strong impression in Sunday’s preseason game against the Colts. Jarrett Stidham started the game but Nix came in on the third possession and led the team to four scoring drives before Zach Wilson took over in the third quarter.
Head coach Sean Payton praised all three quarterbacks, saying, “All three of those guys I thought did a good job. I think it’s probably the most important part of the evaluation — these games and then the scrimmages.” Payton emphasized the importance of evaluating players in game settings, highlighting the insights gained from watching tape.
Stidham had a modest performance, completing 4-of-7 passes for 37 yards with an interception that was more attributed to a drop by Samaje Perine. Nix, on the other hand, impressed with 15-of-21 passes for 125 yards and a touchdown, along with 17 rushing yards on three carries. Wilson also had a solid outing, going 10-of-13 for 117 yards.
Nix’s ability to play in rhythm and make off-schedule plays caught the attention of both fans and coaches, particularly a 22-yard pass to Courtland Sutton on third down. Payton commended Nix’s mobility, noting that it was a positive trait they had observed in practice.
Looking ahead to the next preseason game against the Packers, Payton hinted at a change in quarterback reps distribution. “Stidham will get more next week. They’re doing a good job of handling the competition…those numbers will unfold a little differently next weekend.”
With the Broncos’ quarterback competition heating up and the potential for shifts in playing time, fans are eagerly anticipating how the rookie Nix and the other QBs will continue to perform in the upcoming games. Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting battle for the starting role.
