The New England Patriots are still holding off on promoting rookie quarterback Drake Maye to the top of the depth chart, leaving fans wondering when the change will happen. However, head coach Jerod Mayo recently revealed that there may be something that could speed up the process.
In an interview with Scott Zolak on 98.5 The Sports Hub, Mayo commented, “I think early on he was trying to defer and just be a good teammate. Now, he’s competing to be the starting quarterback; he’s really kind of ramped up his preparation and production on the field.” This shift in mindset and work ethic has caught the attention of the coaching staff.
But despite Maye’s improvements, it is not a guarantee that he will be named the starting quarterback anytime soon. Mayo emphasized that there is a bigger development plan in place for the young player. Mayo explained, “We’re going to stick to the [development] plan — it may not be a popular plan, but we’re doing what we think is right for the organization, not only in the near term but also in the long term.”
As of now, it is expected that veteran Jacoby Brissett will continue to start for the Patriots. However, there is speculation that Maye could potentially take over later in the season.
The Patriots’ schedule doesn’t offer much relief, with the bye week not coming until Week 14. This timing could provide the team with an extended opportunity to assess and possibly make a change at the quarterback position.
While the situation remains uncertain, fans are eagerly anticipating the potential debut of Drake Maye as the starting quarterback for the New England Patriots. Only time will tell when that moment will come, but the team is focused on making decisions that will benefit the organization in both the short and long term.
