When Jerry Jones took ownership of the Dallas Cowboys in 1989, many questioned his qualifications to be the team’s General Manager. However, as the owner, his authority was unquestionable. Fast forward thirty-five years and Jones has gained plenty of experience in a role he initially wasn’t fit for. Recently, he defended his position with fiery language, showcasing his confidence in his ability to get things done.
"I’ve done it all," Jones told Clarence E. Hill, Jr. of the new AllDLLS.com. "So I have an ordinate amount of confidence that if anybody can figure out how to get this s* done, I can figure out how to get it done. I’ve been there every which way from Sunday, and have I busted my a a bunch, a bunch. And there’s nobody living that’s out cutting and shooting that can’t give you a bunch of times they busted their a. So hell no, there’s nobody that could f**** come in here and do all the contracts . . . and be a G.M. any better than I can."
Jones emphasized his role as the ultimate decision-maker, stating, "Plus, I’m where the buck stops. When it f***s up, I got to cover it. And so there you can’t give anybody enough. Can’t give. There’s nobody can do it."
Despite the lack of accountability due to his ownership status, Jones acknowledges the criticism from the media and takes full responsibility for the team’s performance. Unlike other owners who hide behind General Managers and coaches, Jones owns up to his decisions and actions, a trait he has exhibited for over three decades.
"I f** have had hundreds of [bad days]," Jones admitted. "I’m emotional about it sometimes. Well, running this thing, that’s who I want to make the last call. Now, when I can’t f** think, when I’m old and I can’t even do it . . . but I’m a long way from not being able to do it too."
When asked why he doesn’t hire someone else to be the General Manager, Jones explained, "The reason I don’t let somebody else be the G.M. is because I don’t have anybody that I will let do it to actually do it right. And they’re gonna have to come to me and because I know where it is that you’re going to pay for it."
In conclusion, Jerry Jones may not have started with the qualifications for the job, but through years of experience and hands-on involvement, he has solidified his position as a key figure in the Cowboys organization. Love him or hate him, Jerry Jones is a force to be reckoned with in the world of American football.
